Wellness Wednesday: Healthy Fats?

How did all fats get a bad reputation?

✖️ Studies during the late 1940s suggested that saturated fats were linked to coronary heart disease. 

✖️ The American Heart Association & U.S. Senate created food guidelines in the 1960s-70s recommending less saturated fats and more carbohydrates (The 5 Best Health, 2015).

✔  More recent studies have shown that there is not a correlation between high-saturated fat diets & heart disease (Gunnars, 2016). 

✔  Diets high in monounsaturated fats are associated with improved brain function and reduced risk for cognitive decline (Wenk, 2014). 

 

Healthy fats? There are natural fats that are essential for healthy hair, nails, skin, and brain function. Curious to what some of these may be?

😋  Avocado

🌴   Coconut Oil

🌰   Nuts & Seeds

🌿  Extra Virgin Olive Oil

🍣  Fish

A diet high in monounsaturated fats (like those listed above) is said to lead to an increase in the production and release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which is critical for learning and memory.  This is supported by a study published in the Journal of Neurochemistry that showed monounsaturated fats actually altered the basic chemistry and electrical properties of the brain in such a way that learning was enhanced and that the risk for age-related cognitive decline was reduced.
